Coronation, Scholas and Demos

April was....interesting to say the very least.

Teo and I had several events that we went to. The beginning of the month we went to Coronation, it was held in Higgin's Armory. The site was beautiful, the building itself has always been a beautiful one. Only downfall was that the sheer amount of bodies in the great hall rose the temperature high enough that a few people even suffered from heat exhaustion. The set up for court was a bit awkward, only one side able to hear on one side or the other, but it was still beautiful. And the show itself was a pretty damn good one.

One of the pictures I took actually happened to be my favorite one:

A new king arrives in style. It's how we roll in the East.

All in all, it was a wonderful day.

The weekend after that we were supposed to go to Balfar's but I had contracted what was affectionately dubbed the 'Coronation Crud'. So we avoided that one.

The weekend following Balfar's we ended up driving up to Unity, ME to teach some classes for the Medieval Club at our old college, their Schola. Teo taught a beginning rapier class, which we had to borrow weapons from a friend for, and I was all set up for a Pen/Ink Illumination/Shading class. The turn-out for the Schola was relatively small and as it turned out no one showed up for my class. It sucked a bit, but I got to spend the day outside in some relatively gorgeous weather with a bunch of people I've missed terribly. So I really can't complain at all.

And this past weekend our friend requested that we help out with the Girl Scout Demo in return for the loan of the weapons. Keep in mind, I wasn't told about this particular event until a couple of days before. And I wasn't told until the night before that they were hoping I'd bring illumination things. Thankfully I still had all the prep stuff from the Schola that never got used, only down side was I had a small number of things. I hadn't prepared for 100+ young girls wanting to try out everything.

So, I did the best I could with what it was I had.

The table is set.
I had made copies of a couple of my pen/ink pieces without shading, so that I could let people try shading to get the depth needed for pieces, so I split those up and set them out. I had brought the Calligraphy book that Nataliia is letting us borrow, as well as the paper I'd been using to practice. Then I put out drafts of previous pieces I did (thank the gods I keep all my drafts) as well as a couple pieces that are waiting to be used for assignments.

The ready to use ones didn't stay out long, as the parents didn't quite understand the concept of not touching them. The kids were great about it, I told them why I didn't want them touching them and offered to hold them up so they could take a closer look if they wanted to. But a couple of the parents refused to listen; one even ended up leaning her grubby elbows down on them and it took quite a bit of willpower not to give her a piece of my mind in front of the group of girl scouts that were asking me a bunch a questions. After that those pieces got put away for their own safety.

The kids asked a lot of great questions and they were all really excited. It was great. I let them all do a couple of letters in calligraphy, using my pen, which was fantastic until it ran out of ink. Thankfully by that point there were only two or three girls that didn't get a try. They weren't upset, which was great, but I felt bad. I just hadn't known or had the chance to prepare for so many people.

I had some down time, during the 'volunteer lunch hour' so I got some work done on the piece I'm currently painting, which was great. One of the parents told me I should make Christmas cards when she came over and saw me working on it. Confusing, but thanks? I had several mothers ask if I had an art degree, which I'm not sure if they meant it as a compliment or not, but that's how I'm taking it.

All in all, it's been a busy past month. As much as I love events, I'm glad that I have a weekend or two to just be a hermit and stay home to art. I believe the next thing we're doing is the Scribal Schola in Berlin. Which, I'm excited for. Not sure what the day will hold, but it's a day where I can be surrounded by art.

How could I do anything BUT have a good time?
